** NOTE: AMC 242 & 258 Engines

1. Caution should be taken when replacing oil filters on the 242 and 258 engines. These engines do not have a built-in bypass assembly and therefore must utilize a filter assembly containing the bypass valve. If a filter is used that does not contain a bypass valve, all the oil will drain out of the engine each time it is turned off, causing a dry start each time it is restarted.

2. A light knocking sound may occur after the engine is installed into the vehicle. The most common cause is attributed to the installing mechanic that did not reinstall the cam button. The cam button consists of a fanlike button and spring, that must be installed between the camshaft snout and timing cover. This assembly prevents the camshaft from walking back and forth, causing the knocking sound.

3. There are two water pumps used on 242 and 258 engines. Both will fit these engines. Some engines are equipped with a single serpentine drive belt to turn the water pump, alternator, air conditioning compressor, etc. Others use multiple V-type drive belts to turn various accessories. Both engines share the same water pump. However, serpentine belt engines use a different water pump than engines with multiple drive belts. Installing the incorrect water pump will result in engine overheating and if left unchecked, overheating damage will occur. The serpentine belt turns the water pump in an opposite direction than the multiple V-type belt system.
